John Arrowsmith started in the map making under his uncle's business in 1810. After his uncle passed in 1823, and his cousins stepped down, John took over the family business in 1839. Arrowsmith then produced his well-known London Atlas; which is claimed to be one of the first "modern" atlases of the 19th century. His neatness and polished style gained him a respectable reputation.
